Turning up dressed as an angel even manages to soften the rage of a cancer-ridden patient briefly played by Peter Coyote. Even the most disagreeable patient cannot keep Patch away. Not only does he break the rules by going to any length to make dying children laugh, he also ruins hospital equipment, cutting up rubber bulbs to make noses for one and all. Medical students are not allowed on the hospital wards until their third year, but Patch the non-conformist finds this intolerable. The same attitudes that made Patch a persona non gratis with his psychiatrist also rile the cold-eyed dean played by Bob Gunton. It is not exactly a "Magnificent Obsession," however. Already, by challenging the norm, Patch has become a kind of hero. The film leaps forward to his arrival at a Virginia medical school, where his snotty young roommate's first response is that Patch looks far too long in the tooth to be starting graduate school. Patch determines to become a different sort of Hippocrates. Moreover, he discovers that many doctors simply are not up to the demands of the job because they have only a clinical interest in their patients. While locked up, he also learns the value of zany games.
